WEBBER WENTZEL CHARITY CHALLENGE 2010

On Saturday 17 April 2010 more than 70 competitors took part in the Webber Wentzel Platteklip Charity Challenge reaching the top of Table Mountain at least 5 times each.

The event was organised for the second year running by master fundraisers Anton de Waal and Adam Pike. Their drive and enthusiasm for the cause brought in R583 000 of pledges towards our Orphan and Vulnerable Children projects with a focus on building a Children's Support Centre for OVCs in Kosovo, Philippi.

The overall winner Tatum Prins set the peak by ascending the mountain 9 times! "I think a lot of the guys were embarrassed because a girl was beating them so badly", fellow contestant Daniel Matthews said. "Most guys struggled to do 5 ascents!".

Matthews was also a topic of discussion. At 17, he was the youngest in the field, completed 8 ascents and, among the male participants, was the third quickest. He said he had trained for between 17 to 16 hours a week.

Georg Shoenbaechler, who won the 2009 event, ascending 10 times, phoned Anton de Waal challenging his record with R1000. It still remains unbroken.

Once again many volunteers and organisations stepped up to make it a successful event, with special thanks to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway who offered free passes to the contestants to catch a lift down on each lap before running back to the start of the climb at Platteklip Gorge as well as took 10 of the 5 year old Kosovo supporter kids up the mountain, an experience which will be etched in their memories forever! Thanks and appreciation also goes out to corporate sponsors which included Webber Wentzel Attorneys, First Ascent, Buff, Mule Bar, Fusion Design, Faircape and Dear Me.
